Ukrainian Whitework is a little known or nearly lost embroidery technique. I had valuable help with the history and photographs of this technique from two elderly gentlemen that as young men had fled Ukraine just ahead of the retreating German army 1944. In 1946 they along with about 21,000 others took the offer of the Australian Govt to settle in that county. These two elderly gentlemen have over the years set up a museum in Melbourne of Ukrainian artifacts and some of that country's embroidery. The Whitework was from a small area around Poltava East Ukraine and is considered to be little known now. As well as the information about embroidery, each pattern is named for a Ukrainian and tells a little of their tragic stories.
