Hardcover. Condition: NF. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Photos, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Sub-titled "The story behind the air combat claims of the RNZF," this extensively researched volume records the number of Japanese aircraft claimed shotdown, probably destroyed or damaged, by RNZAF aircrew flying in the South Pacific, but incl;uding those of 488 Squadron earlier in the war in the defence of Singapore. Not included in this account are NZers who flew with the RAF or the RAAF. The major section of the book,"The Claims", present a summary of the situation prior to Japan's entry into WWII in Decdember 1941. Following the Singapore combats the major campaigns of the South Pacific are covered --- Guadalcanal to Fefruary 1943, New Georgia February to August 1943, Bougainville to December 1943 and Rabaul attacks to February 1944. Subsequent to that date RNZAF combat aircraft continued to operate, mainly in ground attack role and no further claims were made. The second major section, "Biographies" , in alphabetical order records all aircrew credited with aircatf destroyed or probably destroyed (Part A) and a shorter Par B is for aircrew claiming to have damaged an enemy aircraft in combat. Six appendices complete the texr sectiion with the final appendix "The elusive 100th" dealing with the RNZAF's total of 99 Japanes aircraft destroyed , with the author contending that one claim not recognised denied the 100th victory to the RNZAF Fighter Wing. Chris Rudge made an important contribution to the record of NZ's Pacific fighter squadrons, which were treated in only general terms in the Official War history on the RNZAF. (Air-To-Air" was privately published by the author as a limited edition of 900 copies, but this copy is not individually numbered.) First edition of 2003, 408 pages including the five appendices. references, glossary, bibliography and index, b/w photos throughout, e/paper maps show the major theatres of operations for RNZAF Squadrons. Blue hard covers with gilt front and spine titles are NF, ditto the text block, no inscriptions, Colour at DJ is NF with front panel painting by Ron Fulstow showing the P-40 "Wairarapa Wildcat" flown by Flying Officer G B Fiskin from Guadalcanal. He was the highest scoring Commonwealth pilot against the Japanese in WWII and he provided the foreword for Rudge's book. Seller Inventory # 004927
