Synopsis

"I have always endeavoured to regard myself as a teacher of stagecraft and boy vocalism and not in any way as a 'Talent Scout'. It does not need a clever person to realise whether a boy has a voice or not, and for me to claim 'discovery' of a boy singer serves no useful purpose whatsoever. It is the polishing and careful guidance of a voice that becomes the important factor and therein lays the kernel of my work. Master Ronnie Ronalde, was doubly gifted, not only possessing a fine soprano voice but could also whistle extremely well. Ronalde had already made one or two radio broadcasts when Paul Beverley brought him to me. It was his voice that interested me most, but the possibilities of the inclusion of his whistling abilities at some future date did lot altogether escape me; in fact he was very soon given a number to whistle which he performed in a manner to which I had no claim, knowing nothing whatsoever about whistling, although being a countryman I was able to point out and name the common types of English songbirds, whereupon the lad would proceed to imitate them to an amazing degree of perfection. Exasperating hours were spent at the piano, where Ronalde learned to whistle in perfect tune and tone. This ambitious lad was determined, that his whistling melodies should not consist of meaningless 'chirps' and 'non-harmonic cadences' but must be the true melody, perfectly in tune and melodious to the ear. A unique performer. I have no hesitation in using the words of Oliver Goldsmiith about Ronalde: "The Pink of Perfection". - Taken from the Foreword by Arturo Steffani who created and presented the '21 Silver Songsters' Boys Choir and Ronnie Ronalde. The foreword was discovered in his personal papers after his death in 1974 in Guernsey.
