Review

"This is a book of potentially wide appeal...Having a wide scope, and giving a strong sense of immediacy and relevance to some theoretical ideas, the book could certainly be used as supplementary reading for a great may fluid dynamics courses." ( International Journal of Climatology, Vol. 19, 1999)

Synopsis

This volume places an emphasis on the physical understanding of the fluid mechanics involved in a wide range of natural phenomena relevant to meteorology, air pollution, aviation, engineering, and architecture. The material introduced in this second edition is mainly concerned with analyzing global warming problems, explaining the difficulties in making accurate predictions, and showing the relationship with chaos theory. It also contains a detailed treatment of the subject of air pollution. The mathematical treatment of the topics is separated from the discussion of the physical behaviour of phenomena such as wind turbulence and vorticity, river flow, cloud formation or the transport of environmental pollutants. The text is enhanced by the use of numerous satellite images to illustrate the topics discussed.
