The essays in this collection have been specially adapted by over 30 scientists from the papers they gave at an international conference of the International Geographical Union, convened in August 1987. The essays review the current research issues and problems in the study of recent climatic change, and are supported by full bibliographies. Four main themes are examined: data problems and climatic modelling, regional climatic change, teleconnections and the impacts of climatic change. Topics covered range from the statistical modelling of rainfall and temperature variation and the local and global seasonal fluctuations of climate, to the functioning and structure of large scale climatic systems and the practical aspects of climatic change, including power generation, fisheries, agriculture, storms, "the greenhouse effect" and acid deposition .
