Synopsis
Driven by the availability of computerized cartographic systems, the use of maps in the representation of geographical data has developed rapidly in recent years. Dr. Shiryaev elaborates on the new methods that can be used by employing the image-perceiving capabilities of computers and man; and also discusses how computer techniques can be developed to plot, read and analyse maps. His research has led him to produce a common cartographic language, intelligible to both man and computers; and he shows how this can be used for automatic analysis producing invaluable models and numerical information for geographers.
