Synopsis

The fundamental concepts and applications of probability and statistics are clearly explained in this comprehensive introductory text. After a general overview of the subject, it considers special types of random variables using several examples which illustrate their wide variety of applications. The book also examines their calculation and presents computer programs that calculate their probability distribution and other distributions. There is coverage of sampling, and among the other topics discussed are hypothesis testing; regression, both simple and linear; and problems related to life testing. Also included is a diskette of 35 programs for the IBM PC, giving exact answers or approximations where appropriate.

About the Author

Sheldon M. Ross is a professor in the department of industrial engineering and operations research at the University of California, Berkeley. He receivedhis Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University in 1968 and has been at UC Berkeley ever since. He has published many technical articles and textbooks in the areas of statistics and applied probability. Professor Ross is the founding and contributing editor of the journal, Probability in the Engineering andInformational Sciences, published by Cambridge University Press. He is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and a recipient of the Humboldt US Senior Scientist award.
