Synopsis
UNIX is an operating system that operates on a level of complexity similar to OS/2 and NT. It is a system that is multi-tasking, meaning that it can perform many similar functions simultaneously and can run on a wide range of computers. This text represents a major revision of the original edition. Over 50% of the material has now been expanded or is new, which stems from the dramatic changes to UNIX since 1989 and the development of the X Windows System. The book retains its format of providing introductory material in the first half and discussing advanced topics in the remaining chapters. New chapters on network security, the X Window System and networking are included.
