This book is designed to introduce CICS to COBOL programmers
This book was written to allow a COBOL programmer to begin using CICS to develop or maintain applications in the COBOL language. No prior knowledge is assumed of any online transaction manager.
To help the reader get started, the first exercise is a simple line-oriented transaction. This is followed by more extensive applications that use online screens and their management.
The most thorough sections (because the material would be new to the reader) focus on the creation of online screens (called MAPs) and the use of IBM's builtin utilities for debugging and testing CICS commands. The inclusion of these CICS utilities is unique and helps the beginning CICS programmer to practice writing CICS commands separate from within a program.
All examples are written in COBOL II and use top-down decomposition techniques to demonstrate simplified programming techniques.
In summary, the book is designed to be a quick start for the COBOL programmer who needs to learn and master CICS fundamentals quickly.
