From the Inside Flap

Professionals managing the acquisition of large–scale software systems require clear–cut strategies in order to determine which approach best fulfills their company s needs. Software Acquisition Management is the first book to treat acquisition as a process that can be managed for optimum results. It provides managers with essential information for developing, evaluating, and customizing quality software. The first part of Software Acquisition Management surveys the relationship of software acquisition to the phases of the software lifecycle requirements, design, testing, and integration. It also explains the acquisition lifecycle concept exploration, source acquisition, and performance management and strategies for procuring software systems. The second part of Software Acquisition Management provides actual management processes, techniques, and guidelines for use during the acquisition process. It describes the interaction and responsibilities of the buyer and seller and shows both parties how to divide and delegate tasks. It includes tips on writing a sound proposal. Important legal strategies for negotiating and finalizing procurement contracts are discussed and issues of quality and cost management are addressed. Finally, Software Acquisition Management looks at the future of software acquisition management by discussing the use of artificial intelligence and knowledge–based systems in the acquisition process. Special topics in acquisition management like data rights, reusability, maintenance, and productivity are also examined. By presenting the software acquisition environment from both the contractor and client perspective, Software Acquisition Management will help project managers, systems analysts, and other professionals procure software systems that meet software requirements and stay within budget and on schedule.
