9780471418627: Learning to Program with Visual Basic

Synopsis

Visual Basic has begun to replace COBOL as an introductory programming language due to its ease of use and the near universal move to the Windows operating system. McKeown and Piercy's text addresses the need for a text that offers an adequate balance between the demonstration of the Visual Basic interface and teaching programming logic that the reader must know regardless of the language. The goal of this book is "to achieve a balance between demonstrating the power and excitement of Visual Basic and the need to teach traditional programming logic."

From the Back Cover

Learn programming logic, while harnessing the power of Visual Basic 6.0!

Now with Patrick McKeown and Craig Piercy′s new Second Edition, you′ll not only discover how to write code with this exciting and powerful language, you′ll also gain a fundamental understanding of traditional programming logic, concepts, and techniques. This unique approach enables you to take the programming skills you′ve learned and apply them to other computer languages.

FEATURES

  • The new edition includes a new chapter on VB Script, complete code for examples discussed in the text, more tips, and more homework problems in every chapter.
  • A running case is integrated throughout the text that helps students understand how an actual information system is created.
  • Each chapter contains a discussion of specific concepts, keystroke instructions, screen capture figures, and end–of–chapter exercises that help to reinforce the material.
  • A summary of the Visual Basic elements and programming statements introduced in each cha pter is included along with a list of key terms.
  • It′s Your Turn exercises at the end of each section develop programming skills so that students "learn by doing" not just reading.
  • All of the code included in the text can be downloaded from the book′s Web site at http://www.negia.net/–vbbook. This site also provides students with data files that they′ll need to use in order to complete various exercises.
