This book for environmental managers applies the techniques of total management to environmental management: TQEM. It provides the practical tools for successfully implementing TQEM, measuring results, assessing and improving a program, and benchmarking progress. It also provides guidance on integrating ISO 14000 compliance into existing environmental management systems. Contains a matrix based on the Baldridge Quality Award categories for implementing TQEM and an example of a model company that illustrates how to apply the matrix.

These are the facts: U.S. environmental regulations, alone, now stand at more than 80,000 pages, and the costs of compliance continue to escalate, as do the expectations of regulators and the public. Companies can only get ahead of the curve by moving from reactive to proactive management, taking a quality–based approach that factors in the needs of customers, the public, and the natural resource base. A well–conceived and executed total quality environmental management (TQEM) program not only leads to reduced pollution and lower compliance costs, but to greater efficiency in production, improved worker safety, more responsibly designed products, and in the end, a more satisfied public. Now find out how TQEM can give your company just such a powerful competitive edge in Strategic Environmental Management.
Strategic Environmental Management is the first book of its kind that actually shows you how to make TQEM work in your company. It provides the information, tools, and expert guidance you need to plan, implement, and successfully manage a TQEM program. You will also learn the benefits of fully integrating environmental management into your organization′s overall business plan, and how to sell these benefits to top management.
Dr. Grace Wever first lays the necessary conceptual groundwork with an in–depth discussion of EHS management as seen from the Baldrige, Deming, and ISO 14001 frameworks. She then arms you with a full complement of proven–in–the–trenches TQEM tools and techniques, including:
∗ An original matrix, based on the Baldrige Quality Award categories, that serves as a guide to implementing a TQEM program
∗ Many real–life examples and a complete case study that clearly demonstrate how to apply the matrix
∗ Tools for self–assessment, continuous improvement, and TQEM benchmarking
∗ Strategic information–gathering and knowledge base building techniques
∗ Techniques for measuring customer satisfaction and creating value–added public and private partnerships
∗ And much more
The first practical guide to applying TQM techniques to your company′s environmental management efforts, Strategic Environmental Management is an indispensable working resource for environmental managers, senior managers, and environmental consultants.
"This book was originally written for environmental managers by an environmental manager, but it should have broader appeal. It fills the gap between abstract management texts and anecdotal, topical accounts from industry practitioners who have learned the hard way how to manage. While it provides a conceptual framework for management, it also lends practical guidance on implementation. It relates the conceptual and real worlds through numerous case examples."––Grace Wever, PhD, from Strategic Environmental Management
GRACE H. WEVER, PhD, joined the management consulting practice of KPMG Peat Marwick as a Senior Manager in 1996, and leads the Total Quality Environmental Management and ISO 14000 practice. During her 14 years with Eastman Kodak Company, she held several management positions, including manager of state government relations and manager of environmental affairs at Kodak Park, a 20,000–employee manufacturing facility. Dr. Wever also serves as Vice President of the Council of Great Lakes Industries. She is the principal author of a 90–page guide, the TQEM Primer and Self–Assessment Matrix, published by the Council in 1993.
