Nanotechnology, especially microfabrication, has been affecting every facet of traditional scientific disciplines. The first book on the application of microfluidic reactors in nanotechnology, Microfluidic Devices in Nanotechnology provides the fundamental aspects and potential applications of microfluidic devices, the physics of microfluids, specific methods of chemical synthesis of nanomaterials, and more. As the first book to discuss the unique properties and capabilities of these nanomaterials in the miniaturization of devices, this text serves as a one-stop resource for nanoscientists interested in microdevices.

CHALLA S. KUMAR, Ph.D, is Director of Nanofabrication and Nanomaterials at the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. In addition, he is President and CEO of Magnano Technologies. Dr. Kumar is the winner of the 2006 Nano 50 Technology Award for his work in magnetic-based nanoparticles for cancer imaging and treatment. His research interests are in developing novel synthetic methods, including those based on microfluidic reactors, for multifunctional nanomaterials. He has eight years of industrial R&D experience working for Imperial Chemical Industries and United Breweries. He is the Series Editor for the multi-volume book series, Nanotechnologies for the Life Sciences (NtLS) and Nanomaterials for the Life Sciences(NmLS), published by Wiley-VCH. A former editor of the Journal of Biomedical Nanotechnology, Dr. Kumar is the author of numerous books and original research papers.
Reviews the impact of nanotechnology on the development of microfluidic devices
In the past two decades, microfluidics research has seen phenomenal growth, with many new and emerging applications in fields ranging from chemistry, physics, and biology to engineering. With the emergence of nanotechnology, microfluidics is currently undergoing dramatic changes, embracing the rising field of nanofluidics.
This volume provides up-to-date reviews of the fundamental concepts underlying the design and applications of microfluidic devices using nanotechnology. Moreover, it sets the foundation for such applications as futuristic lab-on-a-chip devices fabricated with nanomaterials. Each of the nine chapters is written by a leading pioneer at the intersection of microfluidics and nanotechnology. The first chapter offers a comprehensive discussion on physics, modeling, technological components, and the fabrication of microfluidics. Other chapters include:
Computational strategies for micro- and nanofluidic dynamics
Nanofluidic devices and their potential applications
Particle transport in magnetophoretic microsystems
In situ nanoparticle focusing within microfluidics
Residence time distribution and nanoparticle formation in microreactors
The fundamental concepts discussed in this volume are invaluable for scientists, researchers, engineers, and students who want to take advantage of the combined power of microfluidics and nanotechnology. References in each chapter guide readers to the primary literature for further investigation of individual topics.
Microfluidic Devices for Nanotechnology is a two-volume publication, the first ever to explore the synergies between microfluidics and nanotechnology. This first volume covers fundamental concepts; the second volume examines applications.
