The central aim of this book is to provide a readable and stimulating introduction to the study of the West Pacific Rim. This is an area to which increasing attention is being directed. The WPR has become what many regard as the centre of gravity of the world economy. It is the most dynamic part of the world in terms of economic growth, trade and investment. It is also an area of increasing geopolitical and geostrategic significance, especially in relation to the Americas, Australasia and the whole Pacific Basin. The WPR is defined as including all the coastal and island states stretching from Japan to Indonesia. Three sets of questions are addressed - exactly how successful have the various economies been and what explains that success?; what are the geopolitical and geostrategic implications vis-a-vis the Americas, Australasia and the Pacific Basin?; and what lessons can be drawn for development elsewhere, particularly in the Third World.
