Synopsis

The approach of this book is to argue that the forms of population migration change systematically over time and from area to area. Using original data from several parts of the developing world and evidence from a comprehensive review of the existing literature, the author shows how human mobility is linked to wider social, economic and political change. Population mobility is not only an integral part of the demographic transition but is intimately related to such broad processes as the rise of nationalism. The historial experience of Europe and patterns in today's developing countries are compared. The author draws on literaure in many disciplines and many cultures to argue his case for a transition in population mobility.
