Synopsis

This work introduces the network concept in spatial economics, links spatial theory to the new "evolutionary" theory of innovation, and examines the role of local, national and international networks of information exchange between firms. It argues that spatial perspectives are crucial to an understanding of the development of innovation networks, and looks at the following: the role of the local milieu on success in innovation; how an understanding of networking can improve the effective application of innovation in firms, and reduce uncertainty in forecasting; the role of telecommunication networks, firm networks and networks of cities in facilitating innovation; new insights on the debate on flexible accumulation, fordism and post-fordism; and the policy dimension of innovation networks.
