Synopsis
Kenneth Davidson has written a study of the algebra of operators with a given triangular form. Work in this field began in the 1950s and 1960s with the work on triangular integrals of the Russian school and the work of Ringrose. It was Ringrose who initiated the study of the algebra of all operators with a given triangular form and he coined the term "nest algebras". In this book Davidson presents material primarily for the benefit of post-graduate students with a backround in functional analysis. Only a basic knowledge of C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras is assumed. The first part of the book concentrates on the structure of compact operators and goes beyond what is normally done in an introductory course in operator theory. The second part deals with basic structural properties of nest algebras - the radical, unitary invariants and similarity invariants. The third part deals with further structural properties of nest algebras. It is not always necessary to read what has come before, so a flow chart has been included for the reader's convenience. The last short part is an introduction to CSL algebras.
