This book describes the application of plastic theory to ultimate limit state design. Devoted to the flexural design of reinforced concrete slab-beam systems, it considers different plan layouts and edge conditions, incorporating the often-neglected effects of finite beam width, T-beam and L-beam actions, as well as the variation in effective flange width. These factors are drawn into the yield line procedure which determine the slab and beam moments of resistance required for a specified collapse load. Elementary and combined collapse modes are studied for each configuration. The author reports considerable experimental evidence, and describes results from full-scale tests which confirm the viability of his design procedures. The advantages of the plastic design method, enabling structural engineers to produce economic designs for complex slab-beam systems, are fully demonstrated. Design algorithms, numerical examples and computer programmes are preceded by general design guidelines.
