9780470207642: Automatic Correction and Improvement of Programs

Synopsis

This study describes the program for understanding, improving and automatically correcting programs; in other words, a program to aid the learning of a program. The author targets three areas: firstly, he gives an operating model of programming by responding to questions such as "what is the minimal knowledge required to be able to read and understand a program?", "how is such knowledge represented?", "how is it activated?", and "when must it be used?". Secondly, he introduces the reader to advanced programming in LISP through the detailed explanation of a complex artificial intelligence program; the reader needs some preliminary knowledge of the LISP language, the most widely spread artificial intelligence programming language and the language in which this program is written. Thirdly, the author makes the reader aware of the problems which exist in intelligent programming environments, the program described constituting a model of these future programming environments.

The book has been produced under the UNIX operating system on the IRCAM DEC VAX-780 computer, using personalized versions of the REFER, VTROFF, TBL, PIC and EQN programs, as well as the author's CONV program for accentuation.
