Synopsis
All humans, even babies, see the world as containing both physical objects, subject to the laws of gravity, and immaterial entities (like minds) that are driven by emotions and desires. In this accessibly written text, Bloom draws upon discoveries in cognitive science to show how this innate Cartesian dualism gives rise to such uniquely human traits as humor, disgust, religion, art, and morality.
