Synopsis
Red and Black is a novel by Stendhal, published in mid-November de1830. The plot unfolds in the nineteenth century France during the thirties, and revolves around the ambitions of a young man to rise above the poverty of his birth. The book's title could refer to the colors of army uniforms (red) and priests (black). The work is judged as one of the best French narrative, example of psychological novel; He influenced many writers of realism, especially Leo Tolstoy, and in the twentieth century André Gide. Red and black is starring Julian Sorel, the son of a carpenter fictional town of Verrières. Julian tells efforts to ascend social condition despite his youth, telling others what they want to hear and doing what they want to see you do.

About the Author
Henri Marie Beyle (1783-1842) had a post in the Ministry of War and followed Napoleon's campaigns before retiring to Italy. Here, as 'Stendhal', he began writing on art, music and travel. He later wrote novels, literary criticism, and various biographical and autobiographical works. Roger Gard was a Reader in English at Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London. He has published work on Henry James and Jane Austen alongside his translations.
