From the Author

Breakfast at Madeline's
Thank you for your interest in BREAKFAST AT MADELINE'S. I had a blast writing it, and I hope you'll love reading it.

BREAKFAST AT MADELINE'S is a murder mystery set in Saratoga Springs, New York. The main character is Jacob Burns, a guy who's a lot like me except richer, funnier, and better looking.

Jacob spent fifteen years as a struggling writer, then won the Hollywood lottery: he sold a screenplay for a million bucks. But success isn't all it's cracked up to be. Now he has writer's block, and spends his days drinking coffee in his favorite cafe, Madeline's.

That is, until one warm spring morning when Donald Penn, an eccentric Madeline's regular, hands Jacob a key and drops dead at his feet. Pretty soon Jacob is jumping out of burning buildings, getting shot at, and running for his life from crazed, pitchfork-wielding theatre teachers. To make matters even worse, he's having trouble toilet training his three year old son.

I've written for the TV shows LAW & ORDER and HOMICIDE, and my plays have been produced around the world, but this is my first novel. As a lifelong mystery fanatic, writing this book was very gratifying--the most fun I've ever had writing. Currently I'm working on the second Jacob Burns mystery, GRAND DELUSION, which will come out in January, 2000.

Here are quotes about the book from two of my favorite mystery writers (and I liked their books even before they gave me quotes!):

"Matt Witten's BREAKFAST AT MADELINE'S ruined my whole day. I was supposed to be working, but I picked up Witten's book and that was it. Charming, witty and moving... an irresistible read. Jacob Burns is a welcome addition to crime fiction, but if Witten writes another one, I'll never get any work done." - Don Winslow, author of THE DEATH AND LIFE OF BOBBY Z.

"Jacob Burns is a wise-cracking, write-at-home Dad with a nose for trouble... Matt Witten is an up-and-coming comic genius in the amateur sleuth game. Watch this guy, but don't spill your coffee!" - Sujata Massey, Agatha Award-winning author of THE SALARYMAN'S Wife.
