Review

The jacket copy compares him to Indiana Jones, but Block's international adventurer Tanner was always more in the vein of Bond or of James Coburn in the Flint films, a gallant American whose patriotic endeavours did not preclude having a good time. Tanner was a cheery anarchist patriot, whose sense of his country's interest did not always tally with that of his ruthless employers. Resurrected in the 90s after being frozen by Swedish agents, he finds himself coping not only with the Internet, and with an adopted daughter grown to adulthood, but also with ageing employers made bitter by the end of the Cold War, the purpose of their lives. When they send him to Myanmar--which he keeps having to remember not to call Burma--to cause unrest, he has a private resolution never to do what they have specifically asked: to kill the saintly radical Aung San Suu Kyi. As it happens, it is all he can do to stay alive...This could have been no more than a charming exercise in anachronism, but Block makes Tanner and his adventures--and his moral compunctions-- entertaining and exciting, and also a critique of the sort of book this is. --Roz Kaveney
