Sitting Pretty" Prettymon is down but not out in Palo Alto, living in a flea-bag hotel (there were some in Palo Alto then) , burning his brain cells on cheap port, and reflecting charmingly in street dialect and at length about a wide assortment of tangential characters, while fending off sexual advances from Marguerite, passing as white in her Rolls-Royce, JoJo, the North Beach night-club owner, Anna, the San Francisco artist/activist. Maybe Sit is a bit too charming for his own good. Sit has trouble holding a job, but so do most of his friends. Sit has a respectable lawyer son who gets him out of trouble and a hyper-respectable son-in-law who tempts him into more. Sit has his brush with the law, and his brush with the reality of death. Al Young (1939 2021) was an American poet, novelist, essayist, screenwriter, and professor. He was named Poet Laureate of California by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger from 2005 to 2008. Young authored novels, collections of poetry, essays, and memoirs. His work appeared in Paris Review, Ploughshares, Essence, The New York Times, Chicago Review, Seattle Review, Brilliant Corners: A Journal of Jazz & Literature, Chelsea, Rolling Stone, Gathering of the Tribes, and in anthologies including the Norton Anthology of African American Literature, and the Oxford Anthology of African American Literature. Young was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in fiction. He was also awarded a Fulbright fellowship, two Puschart prizes, the PEN-USA Award, multiple National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, and a Wallace Stegner fellowship. He twice received the American Book Award, for Bodies and Soul: Musical Memoirs (1982) and The Sound of Dreams Remembered: Poems 19902000 (2002).
