The epic story of the Battle of the River Plate (the title of the film made by the author with Emeric Pressburger in 1954). The Admiral Graf Spee was known as Germany's Tiger of the Seas, a feared hunter with an impressive number of victories in battle. For months she had ruthlessly hunted Allied merchant vessels, but now came under attack by HMS Exeter, HMS Ajax, and HMNZS Achilles. Outmanouvered and outgunned for the first time, her captain landed in the neutral port of Montevideo for vital repairs. Returning to the open sea, it was to be her last journey as she encountered the waiting ships. The film maker Michael Powell gives one of his reasons for writing the book as preserving the story for his sons 'to read and possess' in some more permanent shape than a film - "which can entertain millions, but can seldom be possessed by them". How wrong he was - you can buy it here! Paperback, pp192.
