Alan Clark made his reputation as a military historian with The Donkeys, an account of the First World War, and Barbarossa, a description of the 1941-45 Russo-German conflict. Before his death in 1999 he was MP for Kensington and Chelsea, and had been a Minister in the governments of Margaret Thatcher and John Major.
