Praise for John D. MacDonald and the Travis McGee novels
""The "great entertainer of our age, and a mesmerizing storyteller."--Stephen King
"My favorite novelist of all time . . . All I ever wanted was to touch readers as powerfully as John D. MacDonald touched me. No price could be placed on the enormous pleasure that his books have given me. He captured the mood and the spirit of his times more accurately, more hauntingly, than any 'literature' writer--yet managed always to tell a thunderingly good, intensely suspenseful tale."--Dean Koontz
"To diggers a thousand years from now, the works of John D. MacDonald would be a treasure on the order of the tomb of Tutankhamen."--Kurt Vonnegut
"A master storyteller, a masterful suspense writer . . . John D. MacDonald is a shining example for all of us in the field. Talk about "the""best.""--Mary Higgins Clark
"A dominant influence on writers crafting the continuing series character . . . I envy the generation of readers just discovering Travis McGee, and count myself among the many readers savoring his adventures again."--Sue Grafton
"One of the great sagas in American fiction."--Robert B. Parker
"Most readers loved MacDonald's work because he told a rip-roaring yarn. I loved it because he was the first modern writer to nail Florida dead-center, to capture all its languid sleaze, racy sense of promise, and breath-grabbing beauty."--Carl Hiaasen
"The "consummate" pro, a master storyteller and witty observer . . . John D. MacDonald created a staggering quantity of wonderful books, each rich with characterization, suspense, and an almost intoxicating sense of place. The Travis McGee novels are among the finest works of fiction ever penned by an American author and they retain a remarkable sense of freshness."--Jonathan Kellerman
"What a joy that these timeless and treasured novels are available again."--Ed McBain
"Travis McGee is the last of the great knights-errant: honorable, sensual, skillful, and tough. I can't think of anyone who has replaced him. I can't think of anyone who would dare."--Donald Westlake
"There's only one thing as good as reading a John D. MacDonald novel: reading it again. A writer way ahead of his time, his Travis McGee books are as entertaining, insightful, and suspenseful today as the moment I first read them. He is the all-time master of the American mystery novel."--John Saul

John D. MacDonald was an American novelist and short-story writer. His works include the Travis McGee series and the novel The Executioners, which was adapted into the film Cape Fear. In 1962 MacDonald was named a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America; in 1980, he won a National Book Award. In print he delighted in smashing the bad guys, deflating the pompous, and exposing the venal. In life, he was a truly empathetic man; his friends, family, and colleagues found him to be loyal, generous, and practical. In business, he was fastidiously ethical. About being a writer, he once expressed with gleeful astonishment, "They pay me to do this! They don't realize, I would pay them." He spent the later part of his life in Florida with his wife and son. He died in 1986.

Condition: Used. In a world where the hues of reality seem to be perpetually painted in shades of grey, John D. MacDonald dares to take us on a jaunt through the murkiness of existence with his wonderfully cryptic title, "Darker Than Amber." Published in the whimsical year of 1966, this novel promises to be as complex and layered as the aspirations of a 1960s philosopher trying to make sense of the chaotic world around him?though it may ultimately leave you scratching your head, wondering if the amber had, in fact, been left out in the sun a bit too long. But let?s not rush into the shallow end of literary analysis. Instead, let?s ponder the fact that this book was published by Ballantine Books, a name that might evoke thoughts of frothy beverages and whimsical picnics rather than the gritty tales of human experience. Perhaps the publisher thought a bit of irony would do wonders for the readership, or perhaps they were simply trying to distract us from the dark underbelly of the tale that lies within. Either way, this book is more than just a collection of words; it?s an invitation to get lost in the amber haze of existential dread. Set against a backdrop that?s likely filled with questionable choices and morally ambiguous characters, ?Darker Than Amber? is the kind of novel that seems to whisper sweet nothings to your inner cynic. Expect plot twists that could rival the most unassuming of Rube Goldberg machines, where every turn leads you deeper into the rabbit hole of human folly. The characters might just be as layered as the book cover?perhaps even more so since one can?t help but wonder how much of this story is left unexplored, tucked away between the pages like a forgotten sock in the dryer of existence. Readers will meet a cast of characters that could make an amateur psychiatrist raise an eyebrow or two. From the morally conflicted protagonist who?s probably made more bad decisions than a reality TV star, to the enigmatic side characters who seem to exist solely to add complications to the plot, the people in this narrative may leave you questioning your own life choices. Just when you think you?ve figured them out, they?ll pull the proverbial rug from under your feet, leaving you to ponder why you even thought you understood anything at all. And let us not forget the atmosphere! You?ll be pleasantly (or unpleasantly) engulfed in a milieu that feels both familiar and utterly foreign, like walking through an old neighbourhood that mysteriously changes every few steps. The prose dances between evocative descriptions and terse conversations, creating an experience that feels like a long, awkward dinner with distant relatives?at times enlightening, at others confusing, and often leaving you wondering why you accepted the invitation in the first place. Condition: Used, but not so used that it crumbles into dust at your touch. This book carries the patina of history, with dog-eared corners and the scent of nostalgia mingling with a hint of the unknown?much like the existential dread that permeates the narrative. Its pages may have yellowed slightly, but they hold tight to the secrets of a bygone era, ready to spill their metaphysical guts to any brave soul willing to take the plunge. So, if you?re looking to explore the darker shades of human experience with a slightly ironic twist, "Darker Than Amber" may just be the tome for you. It?s a testament to the quirkiness of life and the ironies that unfold within it. Just remember, as you delve into its pages, that you?ve been warned: you may find yourself questioning your own choices?though that?s hardly a new experience for anyone who?s ever picked up a book from Crappy Old Books.
