Synopsis

This volume of Erasmi Opera Omnia is the fourth volume in ordo II, which contains the Adagia. The Adagia will be published in nine volumes altogether. The first eight volumes will contain 500 adages each, in order of their numbering. (Thus, Volume II,1 will contain nos. 1-500; II,2, nos. 501-1000; etc. Volume II,8 will contain nos. 3501-4000 plus the 151 remaining ones.) Volume II,9 will contain the main introduction to the Adagia series, indices to all Adagia volumes as well as a critical edition of the Collectanea adagiorum. The latter work dates from 1500 and is the very first version, containing only 818 adages, which was to be gradually expanded by Erasmus to contain in the end (1536) 4151 adages. The following Adagia volumes are now available in ASD: II,4 (Adag. 1501-2000), II,5 (Adag. 2001-2500), and II,6 (Adag. 2501-3000), each with an introduction and notes by F. Heinimann and E. Kienzle.
