Jaroslav Kuba received his MSc in physical electronics at the Czech Technical University in Prague, in the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering. Thanks to a French government scholarship, he then completed his doctorate (Ph. D.) at the Université de Paris XI, France. He specialized in physics of plasmas and lasers and submitted a thesis in the field of transient x-ray lasers generated in plasma. Following his Ph. D. graduation, Dr. Kuba worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, USA. In 2005, he accepted a Czech government scholarship dedicated to having Czech citizens at highly specialized prestigious scientific positions abroad return home and help strengthen Czech academia. In 2006, Dr. Kuba was appointed vice-president of the Czech Technical University in Prague, the largest technical university in the Czech Republic and the oldest one in Europe, and an associate professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Later on, he served as deputy-minister for Education in the Czech government, responsible for EU funds, where he signed, for example, the multibillion funding for the most powerful laser in the world (ELI facility near Prague). Dr. Kuba has taught biomedical students for more than ten years, as well as students from other departments, in a number of physics and biophysics courses.
Biophysics: Foundations, Problems, and Solutions is an accessible undergraduate text on a wide range of biophysics concepts, examining the field through real problems and their solutions, with comprehensive computation and explanation. With lessons explored over the course of the book, each section also contains a brief theoretical summary of the physics and biology ideas involved, as well as a set of formulae and laws required to answer the issues presented. Intended to serve as the core book for fundamental courses in biophysics and related fields, including biomedical sciences, engineering, and medical technology, the book is also a helpful guide for seasoned experts and researchers who want to improve their knowledge of biophysics or solve related quantitative problems. Biophysics: Foundations, Problems, and Solutions seeks to support readers across several related disciplines in biophysics-focused courses. The book covers a wide range of topics, including fluid mechanics and physics of flow, capillary and surface effects, acoustics, diffusion phenomena and cell membranes, and even radiology and nuclear physics. The book offers a detailed understanding of fundamental principles and dives in-depth into numerical analysis of biophysics problems.
