Synopsis

Air Pollution, Volume 14 provides a comprehensive overview of air pollution, exploring its sources, effects, and the strategies used to monitor and mitigate its impact on the environment and human health. It covers the fundamental principles of air pollution science, including the chemical and physical characteristics of pollutants, atmospheric processes, and the interactions between natural and anthropogenic emissions. Chapters in this release include Desert dust and health effects, Real-Time PM Monitoring: Insights into Composition Analysis and Source Apportionment, Bioaerosols in a changing planet: Beyond the state-of-the-art, Urban green spaces: A key urban infrastructure for air and acoustic quality, and much more.

Additional chapters cover N2O emissions and NO3 leaching from organic arable crop rotations, Concentrations of elements in lichen and source apportionment, The contribution of industry in the levels of atmospheric heavy metals, and Vehicle-induced fugitive particulate matter emissions in arid environments.

  • Covers fundamental concepts, sources, and types of air pollutants
  • Discusses the effects of air pollution on human health, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases
  • Explores air pollution and its impacts on ecosystems, climate change, and biodiversity

About the Authors

Dr. Anastasia Paschalidou is a Professor of Meteorology - Atmospheric Pollution at the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, where she teaches meteorology, air pollution, and climate change, at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Her research focuses on urban meteorology, environmental epidemiology, and climate change impacts. She has authored over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals, conference proceedings and book chapters and two textbooks, and has contributed to numerous research projects. Since 2020, she has served as an Associate Editor for the journal Science of the Total Environment (Elsevier).

Pavlos Kassomenos has served as a Professor at the University of Ioannina, Greece, since 2000. His primary research areas include environmental physics, air pollution modeling, and the analysis of pollutant dispersion, with particular emphasis on the role of meteorology and weather conditions in air quality. He has published more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has participated in numerous conferences, as well as in over 80 research projects. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for several scientific journals, including Science of the Total Environment, Environmental Pollution, and Heliyon.
