Application of Geosynthetics in Waste Containment: Long-Term Performance of Geosynthetics in Engineering Barrier Systems explains the transport mechanism and influencing factors of pollutants in geosynthetics. The book offers readers a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of geosynthetics and provides a theoretical basis for the development of new geosynthetic materials. It begins by examining the types, current applications, and development trends of commonly used geosynthetic materials in the fields of waste containment and environmental protection. The fundamental characteristics of geosynthetic materials and their roles in environmental protection are also introduced.
Subsequently, it focuses on material durability and introduces new materials which are crucial considerations in environmental applications. Furthermore, the book provides detailed explanations of the application of geosynthetic materials in waste containment, drainage and filtration layers, cover systems, bottom liners, and vertical cut-off walls within engineering barriers.

Haijian Xie is a Professor at the College of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Zhejiang University. His research mainly focuses on environmental geotechnics and performance of landfill barriers. He has published over 100 research papers in leading international journals and conferences, including Geotextiles and Geomembranes, Geosynthetics International, Science of the Total Environment, Journal of Environmental Management, and Journal of Hydrology, et al. He has been selected as the top Young Talents of the Ten Thousand Talents Program of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee. He was funded by the Natural Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth of Zhejiang Province. He serves as associate editor or editorial board member of two internationally renowned journals including ICE Environmental Geotechnics and the JCR Q1 journal Computers and Geotechnics. He also served as the guest editor of Geotextiles and Geomembranes.
Dr. Huaxiang Yan is a Senior Researcher in Engineering Geology at Fuzhou University, China. His research specialises in contaminant transport processes, environmental geotechnics, reactive flow modelling, and coupled thermal–hydraulic–mechanical–chemical processes in soils and porous media. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal papers and is recognised for his work on analytical and numerical modelling of contaminant migration, landfill barrier performance, and subsurface environmental systems. His research combines advanced mathematical modelling with environmental engineering applications to address emerging challenges in pollution control, waste containment, and contaminant fate and transport in complex geological environments.
Dr. Qiao Wang is an associate professor in the School of Resources and Environmental Engineering at Hefei University of Technology, China. Her research focuses on environmental geotechnics, PFAS contamination, contaminant transport, landfill engineering, and geosynthetic barrier systems. She has led several nationally funded projects on the transport and fate of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in landfill cover systems and unsaturated soils. Her work integrates laboratory experimentation, molecular dynamics simulation, and transport modelling to investigate the behaviour of emerging contaminants in environmental barriers. Dr. Wang has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers in the leading journals of environmental engineering and geotechnics.
