High Strength Steels: Microstructure, Properties, and Applications summarizes the historical context and recent research directions of new high strength steels including high-strength low alloyed steel (HSLA), dual-phase (DP) steel, transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) assisted steel, quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steel, medium-Mn steel, high-Mn twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) steel, bainitic steel, martensitic steel and maraging steel. In particular, the state-of-the-art understanding of the processing-microstructure-property relationship of these high-strength steels is the focus of this book. More importantly, the authors’ understanding on the deformation mechanisms of high-strength steels, which is based on their extensive research works over the last two decades, is thoroughly incorporated. Engineering applications of these materials are also discussed.
High Strength Steels is suitable for new entrants or those working in related fields in academia and R&D in the subject areas of materials science and engineering and metallurgy.

Prof. Mingxin Huang is currently a Chair Professor at The University of Hong Kong. He received his BEng and MSc from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in 2002 and 2004, respectively, and his PhD in Materials Science in 2008 from the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), The Netherlands. Prof. Huang’s research interests focus on two areas: (1) the fundamentals of the microstructure–property relationship and the phase transformation of advanced steels and alloys and (2) the development of high-performance metals and alloys.
Dr. Binbin He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China. He received his BEng in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Lanzhou University, China, in 2008 and his master's and PhD from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and The University of Hong Kong, respectively. His research interests cover the different aspects of physical metallurgy, including alloy design, deformation mechanisms, and the phase transformation of high-strength steels.
Dr. Yizhuang Li is a Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation, Northeastern University, Shenyang, China. He received his BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and The University of Hong Kong in 2014 and his PhD from The University of Hong Kong in 2018. His research focuses on the plasticity mechanisms and constitutive models of metallic materials at different length scales.
Dr. Ming Wang is Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China. He received his BEng from the Honors School at Harbin Institute of Technology in 2016 and his PhD from The University of Hong Kong in 2021. His research focuses on the dynamic mechanical behavior of advanced alloys such as advanced high-strength steels.
