Student Textbook Award winner, 2005 BMA Awards
Highly Commended (Basic and Clinical Sciences category), 2005 BMA Awards
This book, unlike some of its competitors, is written specifically for the medical student. It does not attempt to cover material more applicable to the MRCPath trainee. It places pathology in the context of modern medicine and cellular and molecular biology. The book is structured around the basic principles of pathology, the mechanisms of disease and then the systematic pathology (ie disease as it effects the different organ systems). Each chapter in the systematic section starts with a brief account of the normal structure and function of the organ or system, emphasizing those aspects which are important to an understanding of the disease processes. The entire book is illustrated with a superb collection of macro photographs, histopathology and graphics.

'Underwood Pathology' is one of the great brand names of medical undergraduate textbooks. The brilliance of the book is in making concepts clear enough to grasp, without skimping on the detail. The format and layout of this latest edition are virtually identical to the excellent 3rd edition, the most notable difference being the great thickness of the newer text. Underwood has always been the best book on the market, in my opinion, and this updated version further improves this 'classic'. Go buy. -- Student MAD Magazine - Barts and The London Students' Association 20040601
James Underwood is the Professor of Pathology at the University of Sheffield, UK, and a Consultant Histopathologist. For over 30 years, James has enjoyedthe challenge of teaching pathology to students of medicine, dentistry and related subjects, while diagnosing disease in the living and the dead and researching into its causes.
James graduated in medicine and started his career in pathology in London before going to Sheffield. During his early career he held a research fellowship from the Medical Research Council and in the early 1980s he had a sabbatical in Australia. His main interests arein breast cancer and chronic inflammatory liver disease. James is currently Vice-President of the Royal College of Pathologists, President of the BritishDivision of the International Academy of Pathology, and Editor of "Histopathology", a monthly journal. He was, of course, delighted to be declared a Winner at the Royal Society of Medicine's Book Awards 2000 for the third edition of "General and Systematic Pathology".
His main interest outside work is leisure! But he also enjoys strenuous walks with his family in wet, wild and windy places, and he has a passionate interest in music.
