Synopsis

Affective disorders are those disorders in psychiatry where mood disturbance is the central feature: in particular, the term is used for the states of depression and mania. Since the first edition was published there has been steady advance with developments in many diverse areas. This new edition has largely been rewritten. Reflecting the developments and the changes of emphasis, the majority of chapters have new authors. The book is about a quarter larger with nine more chapters. Topics on which new chapters have been added include historical aspects, neuropsychology and imaging, studies of sleep, early environment, transcultural aspects, seasonal affective disorders, depression in medical, settings, maintenance treatment, prediction of treatment response, use of anticonvulsants and interpersonal psychotherapy, while the chapter on neurochemistry has been. The volume aims to provide a comprehensive handbook drawing together knowledge across a wide range of approaches and aspects of the field and the chapters have been contributed by experts chosen because they can speak with authority on their topics, and each has been asked to review present knowledge. The authors are international derived particularly from Great Britain, the United States, Europe and Australasia. An explicit aim has been to encompass the varying approaches which should be incorporated in an eclectic orientation to psychiatry, ranging across the psychological, biological and social. Depression has been given the greatest prominence, in view of its frequency. Mania receives somewhat less space since it is less common. Anxiety disorders in this volume, are discussed mainly in relation to depression. The book is divided into five parts. The first deals with descriptive aspects, including symptoms and their assessment, classification, history of the disorders, diagnosis and prognosis. The second part covers causative aspects, varying from biological and psychodynamic, together with epidemiology and underlying features such as personality. The third part deals with medication and physical treatments and the fourth with psychotherapeutic, cognitive and social approaches to treatment. Part Five deals with selected special aspects such as seasonal affective disorders, depression in relation to childbirth, childhood and adolescence, old age and depression in the special situations of general practice and medical settings. The volume should be useful to students, postgraduate trainees, clinicians and research workers in psychiatry and related medical, scientific, nursing, psychological, social work and mental health disciplines.

Review

"This lucidly conceived, concise but thoroughly comprehensive volume brings to the reader a transnational company of literate experts on topics from neurochemistry to nosology, and from psychoanalysis and family treatments to psychopharmacology. It is the kind of valuable book one keeps near at hand to access the latest facts and perspectives that undergird modern psychiatric thoughts and practices with the entire range of affective disorders." --Daniel X. Freedman, M.D."The HANDBOOK OF AFFECTIVE DISORDERS, 2ND EDITION, is an outstanding book, covering almost every conceivable field of interest in mood disorders. Its comprehensiveness will insure its usefulness to general psychiatric and psychological practitioners as well as to specialists and it no doubt will become the standard reference work." --Kay Redfield Jamison, Ph.D. "An authoritative source of information about the large volume of recent research on many aspects of depression." --"Cognition and Emotion" "Represents work(s) of outstanding British scholarship on depression....Strongest in its thorough discussion of medical treatments." --"Clinical Gerontologist" "This extensively rewritten edition bears little resemblance to the first edition, which appeared a decade ago. It is comprehensive in its scope and should serve as a major reference on affective disorders for psychiatrists and other mental health professionals...I found [the chapters] generally easy to read and extensively referenced. A well-edited, affordably priced reference work that I recommend to clinicians and researchers alike. Trainees in psychiatry, neurology, psychology, nursing, and social work should find it useful in conjunction with the latest journal articles." --"The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease" .,."most welcome...reasonably comprehensive and provides both useful information for those who are not experts and guidelines pointing to future directions for those who are. Within the limits of publication timetables, it is up to date in coverage of the latest empirical and clinical findings. The chapters are generally quite readable and relatively succinct...In all, this collection has much to offer both clinicians and scholars. It could serve as a comprehensive textbook for advanced courses in affective disorders, as well as a guide for practitioners who wish to stay abreast of recent developments. Paykel has produced a useful handbook and one that truly chronicles the developments of a vigorously expanding field." --C"ontemporary Psychology" "This volumeaims to provide a comprehensive handbook drawing together knowledge across a wide range of approaches and aspects of the field." --"Adolescence" "This second edition reflects updated information and research related to mood disorders....It is a very useful book to have for a quick update and a handy reference list....The chapters are clear, well written, and provide comprehensive views of their topics. Dr. Paykel should be congratulated for assembling this fine group and contributors and for his editing efforts." --"American Journal of Psychiatry"
