William Wallace Bell is at present Senior Lecturer in Engineering at the University of Aberdeen. Prior to that he was a lecturer in the Department of Natural Philosophy, also at Aberdeen. He is a graduate of Edinburgh University and received his M.A. in Mathematics in 1958. in 1959 he gained a B.Sc. in Physics, the following year his M.Sc., and in 1962 his Ph.D. in Mathematical Physics. Dr. Bell is a member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and is also an Associate Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. Designed to give the student a good grounding in mathematical technique to enable him to solve a wide variety of problems by its application, this book presents in one volume the basic theory of matrices and determinants necessary for science and engineering undergraduates. It will also be useful as a self-instruction manual for postgraduate research workers who need to learn the subject for the first time, and for students of pure and applied mathematics. The book combines an acceptable level of mathematical sophistication with a simplicity of approach. It deals initially with determinants and their properties. After various aspects of matrices have been covered in the next chapter, the topic of systems of simultaneous linear equations is dealt with, and the final chapter is on eigenvalue theory. There are many worked examples; problems (with solutions) are provided for the reader to attempt, and there is a bibliography.
