This abundantly illustrated overview of modern design across continents and cultures highlights key movements and design traditions. A cross-disciplinary book, it outlines the milestones of modern design history, including Art Nouveau's breathtaking ornament, the Bauhaus' "new vision", the rise of the International Style, postmodernism and contemporary currents, ranging from the Crystal Palace of 1851 to the iPhone.

[H]as opened my eyes to the world of modern architecture, interiors and industrial design. I'm not fascinated with Antonio Gaudi and Art Nouveau architecture, and I have a newfound respect for pop art I previously scoffed. A History of Design delves deep into the social and economic environments that birthed each movement and the natural evolution from one period to another. It's definitely staying on my top shelf.

In the early 1960's she launched Design and Environment, with a special focus on landscape architecture and the design of public space. She also taught the history of modern architecture and design at Pratt Institute and the Parsons School of Design. In 1979 she founded the Institute for Urban Design, a membership organization for landscape architects, architects, and planners, of which she is now director emerita. Jeff Byles is an author and journalist who has written about architecture, urbanism, and culture for The New York Times, The Village Voice, Metropolis, Modern Painters, Cabinet, The Believer, and other publications.
