Expert System Shells / Rules Engines and how to use them
This book came out of developments I did on Medical Expert Systems for health care cost containment in the late 1980s, so it has practical footings of what works. Dr Glover has his PhD in AI from the University of Iowa and he helped give the book solid substance. There are chapters on Expert System Shells and on AI languages for writing your own shells. Chapters discuss the process of knowledge engineering. The most fun chapter is the last one, Chapter 10, which contains forward looking speculation on machine intelligence and consciousness. I am writing this review in 2000, some 14 years after the research for the book was done. The name Expert System is no longer fashionable, but the under the new name Rules Engines, products are selling well. For example JRules by Ilog is a recent decendent of the tools discussed in this book. The guidance on how to use the tools still applies.
