Managing Quality and Strategic Advantage using Baldrige.
This book is about management principles to obtain competitive advantages and produce quality. We believe that quality and strategy are two sides of the same coin: doing-it-right and-doing-the-right-things. "Doing it right" is quality, "doing the right things" is strategy. Doing both is creating competitive advantage. Managing both is being strategic. We use the Malcolm Baldrige criteria as the base methodology and specify extensions to test the degree to which an organization is also effective on creating strategic advantages. We discuss that it this combination that provides sustainable competitive advantage. Because we are very experienced in Baldrige and strategy, both as applicants who won Baldrige, both who have developed and implemented strategies in billion dollar businesses and one (Bauer) who is also a senior Baldrige examiner, we discuss effective tools and methodologies to gain sophistication and effectiveness in managerial practice. In the last paragraph, we discuss what in our experience doest not work, we call these practices "managerial malpractice." This book has been used as input to the successive refinements in the Department of Commerce's Baldrige criteria.
