From the Author

The most thorough biography of London for young people.
Jack London lived a life of contrasts--of great successes, of staggering disappointments. He operated a large California ranch, attempted to sail around the world in a vessel he designed, and wrote some of the best-known works in American literature (WHITE FANG, THE CALL OF THE WILD, THE SEA-WOLF). But in his personal life he suffered in a variety of ways: illness, divorce, struggles with alcohol.

For this biography I was able to consult London's manuscripts, letters, and personal papers. I also interviewed his daughter Becky before her death in 1992 and consulted with many Jack London scholars. My goal was to help readers see London as he actually was, to use the words of London and his acquaintances as much as possible, and to paint as complete and accurate a picture of this fascinating man as scholarship can allow.
