Synopsis
Pinckney Benedict's first novel is a tale of malevolence and violence set in rural West Virginia. Tannhauser, a crazed backwoodsman turned drug lord, entices a bizarre group into his orbit. Along comes Goody, a man whose boxing struggle with one of Tannhauser's goons has left him forever changed.

About the Author
Pinckney Benedict was born in 1964. He grew up and continues to live on his family's dairy farm, not far north of Lewisburg, West Virginia. He holds a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, where he studied creative writing with Joyce Carol Oates, and a master's degree from the creative writing program of the University of Iowa. His first collection of short stories, Town Smokes, was published in 1987 to wide acclaim; included in that collection was "The Sutton Pie Safe," for which Mr. Benedict received the Nelson Algren Award, given by the Chicago Tribune. He has also received a James Michener Fellowship from the Writers' Workshop.
