Synopsis

The aim of this book is to record the significant and influential contribitions to the field of management training made by Bernard Babington-Smith. With Raph Coverdale he was co-originator of the method known as the Coverdale training. Through a series of short essays this book shows how a number of ideas and concepts related to getting things done have developed. The ideas themselves may be seen as related to three themes - the development of groups as observed through studying their proceedings on coverage courses over a period of some thirty years - the development of individuals through examining what experience in such groups seems to mean to an individual and how it can help. The consideration of situations involving transactions between people as individuals and as members of different groups. The book starts with the early development of some important ideas and with some general points about Coverdale groups (by which is meant groups which have some common aim and where the individuals have made the choice to help each other in some sense. Succeeding chapters look at what this means to an individual and how it can help him or her. From this the book returns to the group's proceedings work and thence to transactions where the question of individuals loyalties is involved in ways far beyond those relevant in considering the internal proceedings of a group. Finally it moves on to ideas relating to organizations.
