Synopsis
The aim of this book is to help students develop an understanding of scientific concepts and their applications which are relevant to mechanical and production engineering. Explanations, worked examples and further problems with numerical answers are provided. The concepts developed in the book are a) a systems approach to engineering, in particular measurement; b) statics, including a consideration of equilibrium and structures; c) strength of materials, including composites, beams and shafts; d) dynamics, including linear and angular motion, and vibrations; e) energy and fluid flow, including introductory thermodynamics. The book is complemented by the related books "Engineering Materials 2" and "Engineering Materials 3" which cover the science and technology of materials.
