Early in the development of the broiler industry in Georgia, marketing was relatively simple. Retail markets in the immediate area were able to handle with little difficulty the limited quantities of live broilers delivered to them by producers. But, beginning in about 1940, production rose at a rapid rate and new'markets were needed (fig. Inasmuch as shrinkage and costs of hauling live broilers increase as distance increases and as the largest markets were outside the South, marketing in live form 'was impractical.
