Nous nous mimes à l'oeuvre, néan moins, avec une foi robuste. Dieu ne protè ge - t - il pas le faible qui se confie en lui? M. Michelet outrageait la Femme, conduisait diamétralement au but opposé à celui qu'il semblait poursuivre, en un mot, offrait un véritable poison moral! Nous venions rele ver la femme de sa misère, réparer un grand mal, combattre le célibat, offrir enfin le con tre - poison. La première édition de notre li vra a été enlevée aussi promptement que nos seuls efforts nous donnaient le droit de l'es pérer. La seconde vient de paraître, ayant en tête une lettre de femme. Dans son nouvel ouvrage La Femme (celui que nous venons réfuter ici), M. Michelet dit que son Amour a soulevé d'aigres cris parce qu'il a touché la fibre malade; parce que les uns veulent faire de la femme une prostituée et les autres la placer dans un couvent. Nous ne relèverons pas cette hypocrite accusation. Que l'on veuille bien lire ses oeuvres et les nôtres: nous ne craignons point le jugement moral. Il y a une chose que l'on ne séduit pas malgré.
