Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book takes an in-depth look at the history of the Roman Missal canon, examining similarities between it and liturgies of Eastern churches, particularly the Syriac liturgy. Through comparative analysis of prayers from both traditions, the author argues that the Roman canon was originally structured like the Syriac liturgy but underwent a significant reordering that reversed the sequence of its prayers. This reordering resulted in the separation of a prayer invoking the Holy Spirit (epiclesis) from its original position and the insertion of other prayers between it and the words of institution. The author concludes that understanding this evolution is crucial for comprehending the canon's structure and development within the broader context of Christian liturgy.
