"Where do you get your ideas?"
A lot of people have asked me how much research goes into writing a mystery like Atlanta Graves. Because the story has an art forgery angle, I spent a lot of time reading about forgers. But eventually I decided that if I really wanted to get a feel for the subject, I needed to get my hands dirty. Literally. In other words, I decided to try my hand at forging some paintings.
So I bought myself a bunch of paint and some brushes and started cadging images out of art books. My efforts at faking Franz Hals and Miro and Picasso and so forth wouldn't have fooled anyone...but they weren't THAT bad either. What I learned was that if someone with fairly limited art experience like me could make a half-way respectable stab at forgery, then a trained, skilled, sneaky professional wouldn't have a terribly hard job ripping off the masters.
The lesson? If you're an art buyer (especially of modern drawings and prints!), you better be careful about what you're buying.
