This book gives a brief historical introduction to the European Treaties and outlines the political circumstances surrounding their signing in the 1950s. In the early chapters, the functioning of the institutions and organs of the Community are described with sections on direct elections to, and the workings of, the European Parliament. Whilst Euratom and th ECSC are covered, the core of the book is devoted to a description of, and commentary on, the EEC policies and European case law as they affect a wide range of social, political and commercial issues. Amongst the topics discussed in this edition are industrial and intellectual property rights, external relations with the UN, the OECD and North America, development policy, the financing of Community activities, including a discussion of the background to Britain's budget rebate and an extensive bibliography.
