The book sets out the compressible packing model, in which the packing density of a mix of particle sizes depends on how the packing is built, including the compaction effort applied. It works with "virtual" packing density rather than the conventional measure. It also covers the wall effect, in which coarse particles disturb the packing of fine ones, and the loosening effect, in which fine particles open up a coarse-particle skeleton. Compressive strength is examined in relation to aggregate maximum size and grading, mixture proportions, entrapped and entrained air, and how the concrete is mixed, placed and compacted.
