The work opens with the packing density and homogeneity of granular mixes, and proceeds through the properties of fresh and hardened concrete that follow from granular structure: rheology and placeability, compressive and tensile strength, elastic modulus, creep, autogenous and drying shrinkage, adiabatic temperature rise, and durability. Attention is given to the role of Portland cement, pozzolans, silica fume, fly ash, limestone filler and superplasticizers, together with coarse and fine aggregates, in determining mixture behaviour. Specific classes of concrete treated include high-performance concrete, lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) and shotcrete. Calibration procedures, filling diagrams, rheometer measurements and simulations are set out, with worked equations, tables and experimental data drawn in part from the Civaux case.
