Synopsis

This book provides an important reference work on the "state of the art" of natural hazard science as it relates to civil protection. It also presents much of the current wisdom of the emerging "science" of civil protection. Based on the proceeding of an international conference on Natural risk and Civil protection held in 1993 in Belgirate, Italy, the work is intended as a contribution by the European Communities to the United Nations International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNPR). The media constantly reminds us of the enormous potential for disasters arising from the action of "natural" and "technological" hazard agents. In Europe alone, the diversity of such agents is vast, ranging from the adverse by-products of the north's industrial activities and associated complex transport infrastructures, to the geophysically active south; from landslides to wildfires and, throughout the continent, the challenges posed by storms and floods.
