This book is the Proceedings of the fifth in the major series of triennial international conferences on the Durability of Building Materials and Components. Building owners and designers are increasingly becoming aware of the importance of durability in building design, particularly because of continuing pressure to reduce life-cycle costs of buildings. Current research into building materials seeks to expand and improve present understanding of the causes, mechanisms and rates of deterioration of building materials. Reliable means of repair and prevention of early materials failure are also urgently required.
Research into new materials for use in construction is also continuing, with emphasis on new materials to reduce construction costs either by substitution of existing materials, or by reducing construction times.
Durability of Building Materials and Components presents the latest research on these topics from around the world, and includes the papers presented at the International Conference held in Brighton, UK in November 1990. The Conference was the fifth in the series of triennial conferences and follows those held in Canada (1978), USA (1981), Finland (1984) and Singapore (1987).
